Headteachers message
Next Friday we have our Remembrance Day service – the weather forecast looks dry but all students will be standing for 30 minutes during our school remembrance ceremony - so they should be in full school uniform including blazers - outside coats will not be permitted unless weather dictates. Students can wear their school jumpers or cardigans under their blazers.
We have spoken in assembly this week about the importance of this year’s centenary of the end of the first World War. We have also asked students to wear a poppy to remember those that fell in service of their country and to be respectful in next week’s ceremony. Our main school hall now displays the plaque of remembrance to the 24 ex-students of Lutterworth College (then Grammar) that died whilst serving during the first and second World Wars. As we enter the week of remembrance we share below the story of one of them:
Peter John Page; RAF Pilot of Bomber Command’s 106 Squadron.
Peter Page grew up in Gilmorton and whilst attending Lutterworth Grammar School (as it was known then), Peter was appointed Head Boy. When World War Two broke out, Peter (then aged 19) joined the Royal Air Force where he trained as a bomber pilot. This enabled him to become a co-pilot and subsequently a pilot of Lancaster Bombers.
He was sent on many missions as co-pilot to Guy Gibson of ‘The Dam busters’ fame. However, Commander Gibson would not take Peter on the extremely perilous Dam Buster raid as his wife was expecting a baby.
Peter was based in Nottinghamshire with 106 squadron where he flew nine different Lancaster’s before getting his own, number W4367.
On the night of the 25th of June 1943 (Peter’s first wedding anniversary) after a raid on Glesenkirchen, 33 aircraft failed to return. Four of them belonged to 106 Squadron and one of them was Peter’s Lancaster, W4367. It was shot down over the Dutch coast and only four of the seven man crew’s bodies were ever recovered. Peter’s was one of them and he was buried in Harderwick, Holland.
Peter was 23 years old when he was killed in action, his daughter Anthea was born two weeks after his death. He was greatly missed. Peter’s widow Joan Page never married again. She spent her life as a working mum and later, grandmother. Becoming a teacher, she taught at the Sherrier School here in Lutterworth for many years.
With sadness but also gratitude, we remember Peter and his family’s sacrifice for our freedom.
