Textiles

Our future economy will be built on creativity; there will be opportunities for people who combine creative, technical and social skills. In the last 20 years the UK creative industries have grown faster than any other sector. The British Fashion Industry, the UK’s largest creative industry, is worth 35 billion in GDP to the British economy each year. Critical thinking and problem-solving are at the top of the list of skills that employers believe will grow in prominence along with skills in self-management, such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility. - Skills that you learn while studying Textiles.

The curriculum at Lutterworth College is sequenced to build upon previous knowledge and give a greater understanding of creative practice. Our engaging and challenging lessons broadens our students’ experience, develops imagination and technical skills, fosters creativity and promotes personal and social development. We aim to nurture an enthusiasm for Art, Craft and Design using textiles as our main medium, to develop critical, practical and theoretical skills.

We work alongside our Church of England CHRIST values to enrich how our students experience. Students can demonstrate these values at various points across the three key stages in the following ways:

  • Being Courageous by being acting on initiative, identify opportunities and proactive in putting forward ideas & solutions.
  • Being Hardworking by being committed to practice, as this is the way to become proficient in learning new skills.
  • Being Reflective by using analytical skills to appraise, compare and contrast the work of textile designers and other historical and contextual sources and use this to inform your own work.
  • Being Inspirational by presenting personal, imaginative outcomes, that effectively realise your own intentions.
  • Being Supportive in knowing that you’ve only really mastered a skill when you have successfully taught it to another.
  • Being Tenacious by realising and embracing the fact that art and design is a continual process of experimentation and development in order to reach mastery.

Key Stage 3

The projects taught at KS3 have been specifically tailored to ease our students through the transition period and narrow the attainment gap. Students develop their analytical ability, creativity and practical textiles skills through a series of taught projects, which are based on the assessment objectives in the GCSE specification. The projects and progression are recorded in their project booklets.
